Holy Matrimony

Holy Matrimony: A Lifelong Covenant of Love

From the first pages of Scripture, marriage is revealed as part of God’s plan—uniting man and woman in love and culminating in the “wedding feast of the Lamb.” Throughout the Bible, marriage is shown as a sacred covenant renewed in Christ’s union with His Church.

In Matrimony, a husband and wife become living witnesses of Christ’s love for His Church. As one Nuptial Blessing proclaims: “Father, you have made the union of man and wife so holy a mystery that it symbolizes the marriage of Christ and His Church.”

Marriage is not simply a contract; it is a covenant—a permanent, faithful relationship between two persons called to love each other and God. This celebration is a liturgical act, most fittingly held within the Church’s public worship. Catholics are encouraged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy, uniting their vows with the source of grace.
