First Holy Communion: Receiving the Eucharist

At First Holy Communion, we receive the Holy Eucharist for the very first time—the true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in the consecrated bread and wine. For Catholics, there is no greater gift than to encounter Christ in the Eucharist at Mass.

This sacrament is one of the most significant moments in a Catholic’s life. It marks the first time a person shares fully in the Eucharistic celebration. Most children receive First Holy Communion around the age of seven or eight, when they have reached the age of reason and can understand this sacred mystery.
