Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

In times of illness or suffering, the Church offers the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick—a powerful sign of Christ’s healing and presence. This sacrament brings spiritual strength, peace, and grace to those who are seriously ill, reminding us that even in weakness, we are never alone. It is a moment to turn toward God, deepen trust in His love, and experience His mercy.

Through the blessed oil—pressed from olives and consecrated by the bishop—the Holy Spirit brings comfort and renewal. This sacrament is not limited to the final moments of life; it may be received whenever a serious illness or condition arises, and even more than once. Whether celebrated individually or in a group, Anointing of the Sick assures us that Christ, the Good Shepherd, walks with us and offers healing—both spiritual and, at times, physical—through His victory over sin and death.

There are three aspects of the Sacrament including:

  1. The prayer of Faith,

  2. The laying of hands,

  3. The anointing with the Oil of the Sick.

Typically, individuals celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation before receiving the Anointing of the Sick and then receive Communion afterward.
